New year, new start, new me… Nope!
Last year was a pretty exceptional one for me, on the whole. I achieved more than I had planned, and ticked off some life goals along the way. I turned 30, I grew my business, I developed my creative skills. Oh, and I got married. So yeah, a pretty good year!
But each of those things was expected. They were things I had prepared for and strived towards, continually working towards reaching those milestones. Yes, there were some obstacles and sidetracks along the way, but that’s all part of the journey. And that’s the thing. I’m not really in the mood for setting more goals. I’d rather have some time exploring some new paths and seeing what’s off the beaten track.
I started the year by heading out for a walk with my wife for a walk on our favourite beach with our dog. In fact, it’s the same beach where we got engaged over 2 years ago. Of course, we frequent this beach fairly often as it’s on our doorstep and it’s dog-friendly… but that doesn’t make it sound quite as special.
Spending an hour or so in such a familiar space, retreading the same route that we walk so frequently, was exactly what I needed to reassure me that I ought to have a year of newness. Thing is, I’m not one of those people who just set arbitrary goals for the sake of a new year’s resolution. Life just isn’t like that, at least not for me.
Instead, I’m setting myself a year of no resolutions. No goals, no targets, no end points.
The point of this is just a little experiment, to see if I can continue on the trajectory that I’ve been on for the past few years without resorting to setting out an exact path or destination. It matters not where I get to this year, as long as it is in one direction – Forward.
I am certain that there will be some big changes in my life, as that’s the part of my life that I’m in at the moment. So, for 2018, I will wander this part of my life freely, just trying to take things one step at a time, and keep on moving forward.
With a smile and some sunshine, I wish everyone all the best for the year ahead. Now, let’s go have some adventures!
